High potential middle and high school students are encouraged to apply to one of our programs, where they will be selected to participate in an initial 8 week long online educational series taught by our experienced staff of STEM educators, and where high school students will be paired with scientific experts in their field, who will serve as their mentors throughout the program. Based on their interest, students will be expected to identify and select an individualized topic for independent research study, where they will diligently apply the principles of the scientific method, generating a hypothesis and developing a research work plan to test that hypothesis in a real-world setting.
The program will culminate in a week-long expedition-like trip to an international exotic destination that is rich in the unique natural phenomena that the students will have learned about during the program. Upon returning home, students will complete a polished research paper summarizing and synthesizing their findings in their final three weeks of the program.
Throughout the program, students will be exposed to exciting science where they can immerse themselves in the scientific method to design and conduct original research through real world experiments, analyzing data, and formally presenting their research at the end of the program. Such research will be of the caliber often seen in finalist contenders in national and international science competitions, and we expect that many students will submit their work for entry into such competitions or for publication.
In addition to the rigorous scientific experience, program participants will enjoy significant down time during their trip to the exotic destination, which will involve exciting and exhilarating tourist activities and excursions that draw upon the unique natural settings in each destination. Program participants are encouraged to attend the final trip with their families, who will be fully entertained throughout the length of the program with their own set of planned activities and excursions that are tailored to the nature enthusiast and lay tourist. On certain days, both students and their families will enjoy excursions together. The trip will culminate in a research expo on the final day, where students will present their research findings to fellow students and their families, followed by a party to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.
